FAQs

How do I clean my bowl?

If your bowl is decorative, you will only need to wipe it out with a dry cloth once in a while.

If you use it for dry things, like fruit, wiping it out with a damp cloth every now and again and waxing it periodically will keep it looking fresh.

If you use it regularly for wet things like salads and serving food you will need to wash it after each use. It’s best not to let salad oils stand in the bowl for any longer than necessary and to wash the bowl thoroughly with soap and warm water, don’t be afraid to give it a good scrub (a 3M pad works well,) and then dry it. Painted bowls may water-spot if they are left to air dry with droplets of water on the surface.

Should I wax it?

Yes, but only if you want to.

Your bowl is finished with walnut oil and beeswax. With repeated use and washing the wax will eventually wash off. Maintaining the wax finish will prevent salad oils and the like from penetrating the wood and reduce staining from things like strawberries and beets. If you want to keep it looking, fresh wax it regularly. You can get wax from me, see my shop page, or at a local retailer, kitchen shops are good place to start.

How do I do that?

Give it a good clean with soap and water, scrubbing the inside to remove any residue, a 3M pad works well for this. Dry it with a towel then let it air dry thoroughly. Apply the wax to the surface and rub it in with your fingertips, let it stand giving the wood a chance to absorb the wax and then wipe off any excess and buff it with a soft cloth. Wax both the inside and outside.

What about stains from things like beets?

Beets, straberries and blueberries may stain your bowl, but these stains are usually temporary and typically the stain will lift with water. Let some water sit on the stain for a few minutes then scrub the area with a cloth, the stain will start to fade. Stains will typically disappear with repeated use.

What about the dishwasher...

Best not to wash your bowl in the dishwasher or leave it in a sink half full of water, left long enough it may crack.
