Hewn Bowls

Hewn bowls are what’s known as a labour of love, there’s a definite pleasure in their making but they are also hard physical work. The outside is shaped with an axe, drawknife and spokeshaves, the inside with an adze and gouges. The bowls are roughed out green, then dried and paired down to the finished form. The surfaces are finished off the tool and retain the marks of the tools used to shape them. The bowls are shaped by eye and feel and have an attractive tactile quality.

The bowl below is typical of my bowl form and measures 22″ x 12″ x 7″ tall. The bowls are finished with walnut oil.

A few more similar but smaller bowls.
